    Exactly what you need

These work perfectly in our sanctuary

    Very robust light

By David Rated 5 out of 5 Date: 2016-06-15

This Altman light is really good quality, but everyone knows Altman makes good stuff, anyway. With a 500 watt bulb and a set of barn doors I am able to light a stage for video and spot the presenter with really good separation of the spot from the on-stage video projector screen. It is a Fresnel so the spot isn’t clearly defined on the edges like an ellipsoidal, but if you need to isolate a spot this will do it. The barn doors on front make it that much easier. In wide flood mode it produces a nice, even spread – kind of like a Par 64 can.

    No frills performer.

Obviously the major attraction to this product is price – about 70% cheaper than a comparable brand such as Arri or Mole, etc. There is a trade off, as always. I would describe the fixture as no frills, robust and unrefined. Let’s start with the pros – it’s cheap – cheaper than foreign Arri knock offs even. it’s UL listed, and made in the U.S. it throws a decent beam, and the housing is robust enough, with a nice solid yoke. The teflon cable is quite nice and I was pleasantly surprised to see that it comes equipped with a three prong Edison plug – I was expecting bare cable. A handsome black cable safety is included, and all moving components operated flawlessly. It is simple to access the housing – no tools needed – to install or relamp a globe. The fresnel lens is very good, nice and thick with a very beefy retaing clip. The yoke is also adjustable. Now for the cons – the focusing mechanism is a primitive slide moved by a butterfly nut…fine for me, and easy to fix or replace as well. Some may not like it. There is no safety or retainer for the gel frame which essentially becomes a razor if it falls….a con easily fixed with a drill and cable or chain safety….this took me about three minutes to install. I used the extra yoke hole. A C- hanger or TVMP adapter will cost a few bucks, I ordered a TVMP with a nice large handle for tightening. The yoke knob is plastic, which is not great. I may upgrade with an MSE part if the thread matches. Altman is well regarded, especially in theatrical circles. With optional barn doors, this will be a nice little fixture. I have three and am planning on buying Altman cyc lights and softlights as well. I am more than satisfied with this purchase. Ideal for my small independent film co. I lamp two at 750W, one with dimmer and one with a BTL 500W…or 575..whatever it is! This gives me lots of play with a basic three point setup.

A good buy for the money.

I’ve just retired from 47 years in Commercial/public television(lighting, shooting, editing)and have a lot of very good equipment in all those areas. I have personally invested in a kit with ARRI fresnels(4) along with various other brands of lights. Favorite not made anymore is the Lowell 2K softlite (lucky I have two). Never been much of a fan of Altman products. They are economy in construction which makes all the line more affordable. In this case I wanted a small fresnel for my living room as an actual working light for focusing on my reading chair etc. I purchased a small in line dimmer to go with this fixture and it is working great. When I set up the light w/ it’s barndoors I was pleasantly surprised at how good this fixture is. It will live in my living room mostly but I would not hesitate to take it on location for a shoot. I treat all my equipment with care and I feel good about this Altman. By the way it has a nice short throw pattern, the lens seems pretty good. When you consider what another ARRI would have cost and the main purpose I had, well, I’m very happy.

    Great Spot

We were purchasing these to swap out for some spots that weren’t working. Easy to install – reliable units.

    Great little fixture

By Anonymous Rated 5 out of 5 Date: 2012-02-01

I’ve used several of these, and they always produce the results I need. For this kinda price, it is a great light fixture. I know I’ll buy more.

    Built very well

By Sandman Rated 5 out of 5 Date: 2018-05-04

This fixture is built very well. Not quite like tank, but fairly close to it. A note of caution: this unit is very hot. A 750 watt bulb will be hot, I assumed. But I didn’t realize the cowling/fixture would get as hot as it gets. Duh. But wow, it is bright. I have to be very careful where I set up this fixture. However, this is my first foray away from inexpensive LED lights. A very important lesson learned, but well worth the money.

Very robust light, good directional control

By David Rated 5 out of 5 Date: 2016-06-16

The 65Q is a high quality, well-built Fresnel which is what we’ve all come to expect from Altman. Its got a nice spot ranging from wide flood to narrow spot with the spotlight adjustment on bottom. Spots are not defined like a focused ellipsoidal, more like a Par 64. With a 500 watt bulb and set of barn doors I was able to spot a presenter on a stage for video and completely isolate the on-stage projection screen from any spillover light.
